Success in Interracial Dating
It is strange to think that it was only in 1967 that the ban of interracial marriage was lifted by the Supreme Court of USA. Before 1967, sixteen states have placed a ban on interracial dating and the couples that have opted to engage in this type of marriage in these states are immediately imprisoned. That situation today is unimaginable as we see interracial couples from everywhere. As the ban has been lifted decades ago we see interracial couples become successful in their marriage. Although this is a great feat in the history of US, the fact that it was only enacted in 1967 has made everyone feel that the motion is actually too late.
The Existing Stigma
But even though the ban has been lifted for decades, the stigma on interracial couple still exists. Those who have engaged in interracial marriage should expect that not everyone is comfortable with the situation. Worst, there are those that have explicitly showed their discontent. This is truly a racist act that unfortunately still happens in the society. Even the family members of the interracial couple may have some doubts regarding the marriage and would show disapproval. The interracial couple should be aware that even though racist acts are undesirable in today's society, they would still be met with criticism.
Causes of Inconvenience
If you dig in deeper to the roots of objections for interracial couples, you will find that the reasons are often based on culture, politics and even religion. There are parents that would always say no to interracial marriage because they lived in a time where interracial marriage is unimaginable. Some would say that they don't want to be mixed with other races. They are not angry with a particular race but they just want their social interaction to be in the same race. Religion is still pointed out as a cause particularly in Asian interracial marriage.
Coping with the Stigma
Unfortunately, this problem can't be solved overnight. Couples have to deal with the situation for a very long time. Slowly, they could incorporate their respective partners to their society and to their family. Along the way, they could seek help, not just from a psychiatrist but a support group. Because of the popularity of interracial marriage, support group has started to exist in different cities. After all, the best support an interracial couple would get is also from other interracial couples.
It is also important to think that this stigma is not just based on African American and Caucasian. Marriage between Asians, Mexicans and Europeans are often met with scorn in their respective community too. But it is strange to think that even though there is an discreet objection against interracial marriage, the percentage of divorce among interracial couples is minimal. It just shows that true love exists between interracial couple.
When you are thinking of dating outside your race, be ready to face the unfortunate consequence. But if you are faithful with your partner and show true love, your success in marriage is assured. Your love will last longer than the scorn of the society.
